Always lively on account of its café terraces and restaurants, Brasov's main square is named after the old town hall which is its centrepiece. Of harmonious proportions, it was the scene in the Middle Ages of great fairs. It retains traces of its rich past, notably the merchants' house (1544), a former market building converted into a shopping arcade. Note also the late-19C neo-Byzantine Orthodox cathedral of the Dormition of the Virgin and of course the 14C town hall.
