El Escorial was a place of great splendour during the reign of Philip II and the Habsburgs, and only returned to glory under Charles III and Charles IV in the 18C. Each dynasty occupied a different wing, upon which they imposed their own style. The Bourbon apartments with their luxurious decoration, tapestries and paintings are in striking contrast to the sobriety of Philip II's apartments and those of the Infanta, more simply decorated with Talavera ceramics and paintings.
