The strategic position on top of the plateau has been fortified since antiquity. Reinforced in the Norman era, the castle was embellished by Frederic III of Aragon who set up his summer home and established a garrison of trusted Lombard soldiers there. 6 of the castles original twenty towers have survived. The castle had a roughly pentagonal arrangement which embraced the harsh terrain. From Eagles' tower at the top you have a magnificent panoramic view over the Sicilian mountains.
