The ancient monastic site of Fore was inhabited from the 7C until the 16C. A charter in 1436 authorised the construction of a wall in order to protect it from Irish attacks. The ruins of the south and west gates can be seen beside the road. Some distinctive features of the abbey, known as the «Seven Wonders of Fore» are presented as miracles, including the «monastery in a bog».
