The long, sandy San Lorenzo beach in Gijón is lined by a wide promenade paved with white stones and separated from the beach by wrought-iron balustrades known as barandillas. These are a typical feature of many beaches in northern Spain, notably in San Sebastian, as are the small, colourful striped beach huts which can be admired on the orange sand in the summer.
