This vast wooded expanse is Europe's largest national park, covering an area of almost 3 000km2. Njurgalahti holiday village and reception centre can be reached by car and is an ideal starting point for walks. The valley of the River Lemmenjoki, Leämmi, is the heart of the region. The picturesque River Ravadas and its foaming waterfalls, Ravadasköngäs, can be reached on a one-day hike, as can the gold-rich area of "Kultala", where the river has borne fruit for many a prospector since the 19C.
