Dotted with ten gates, the ramparts of this town form a trapezium 2km long and 500m wide. It is thought that the city was fortified long after it was built, when it was first threatened by its Burmese neighbours. The walls here have stood for centuries, protecting an archaeological World Heritage Site which includes two museums and two major temples. Unfortunately, the royal palace, built entirely of wood, has not survived.
