Built in 1701 on a pentagonal plan and reinforced in 1840, St Peter's Fort was the city's strategic defensive outpost at only 2.5km/1.5mi from the Belgian border. The interior of the fort is linked to St Peter's mount's network of caves. Commanding an attractive general view of Maastricht, the site is now home to a restaurant.
