Of the 88 temples on the Shikoku Pilgrimage, Ishite-ji, the 51st, is the most impressive and most famous. Built during the Kamakura era, c 1330 (although its origins date back to the 9C), it has fine Chinese-style architecture. Of particular note are the Ni-mon, a gate with a floor built above it, the belfry and the three-tiered pagoda. Its name, Ishite-ji, or Stone Hand Temple, comes from the legend of Emon Saburo, a penitent who was reincarnated as a child born with a stone in its hand, thanks to a miracle performed by the monk Kobo Daishi.
