Little Italy, where New York's mafia godfathers plotted behind a thick fog of cigar smoke, is a mere shadow of its former disreputable self. One can still glimpse the occasional stall selling ham and parmesan cheese along Mulberry Street, north of Canal Street, but Chinatown's bazaars are fast gaining ground. For a real taste of Italy nowadays, head for the Bronx.
