Located in the Meatpacking District, the Whitney Museum of American Art, founded by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1931, is housed in a building by Renzo Piano. Well known for its temporary exhibitions that situate American creativity in the context of international art movements past and present, the museum also has an exceptional collection of over 20 000 works of art from the 20C and 21C, by artists such as Edward Hopper, Alexander Calder, Andy Warhol and Kiki Smith.
