This hike (11mi/19km, 7hr return) is one of the finest in Les Hauts de St-Denis. The track, at first steep and very verdant, leads (in 2hr) to the Gîte de la Plaine des Chicots refuge, where we recommend you stay overnight. The next section climbs gently via rocky slabs that are fully exposed to the sun. When you reach the Roche Écrite (2 277m/7 469ft), covered with inscriptions, enjoy the panoramic view over the Salazie cirque to the left and the Mafate cirque to the right, with the Piton des Neiges and the rounded summit of the volcano in the background.
