The Taoist temple of Mystery, the geographic and historic heart of Suzhou, was founded in the 3C on the site of the city's first palace. A favourite meeting-place with the locals, the temple has a few pavilions dating from the Song dynasty, depicted by their characteristic roofs with upturned corners. Interesting collection of tablets (Tang dynasty), depicting, among others, the founder of Taoism, Lao Tseu, and Avalokiteśvara, bodhisattva of compassion.
