The small glacial Lake Churup is one of the closest to Huaraz. The hike begins in the village of Llupa (alt. 3 300m) for those arriving by local transport. Guided walking tours begin in Pitec (alt. 3 900m). You climb up to the lake, nestled at the foot of Nevado Churup, whose summit peaks at 5 495m. The ascent is quite steep, with a very steep climb on the moraine dyke before the lake. Go there in dry weather and allow a day for a round trip, including 6hr of walking.
