The Monument to Friendship between the Soviet Union and Egypt stands at the Aswan Dam, a colossal construction built in the 1960s. Envisaged by Nasser, its construction enabled the flow of the Nile to be regulated as well as the development of agriculture in Egypt. However, it also resulted in the displacement of almost 100 000 inhabitants and several ancient monuments, some of which were saved by UNESCO, such as the temples of Philae and Abu Simbel.
