Erected in 334 BC, the Monument of Lysicrates is the only surviving example of the choragic monuments that once celebrated the winners of the Dionysia contests (theatrical and liturgical performances). These monuments once dotted the road which connected the Theatre of Dionysus and the Agora, following the present Tripodon road, whose name alludes to the bronze tripods given to the winners of these concerts. A sculpted frieze at the top of the columns depicts Dionysus changing pirates into dolphins.
