It was on this windswept plateau, in July 1916, that Canada's Newfoundland battalion was all but wiped out. It is the largest Somme battlefield to have been preserved, and visitors can pass between the Allied lines and German trenches. The Visitor and Interpretation Centre is dedicated to the lives of the Newfoundlanders before, during and after the First World War. The Newfoundland caribou memorial presides over the park, and there is also a balcony with a view over the battlefield. A moving and informative tribute.
