This border crossing was once used by diplomats, foreigners and the military. There were three border crossings between the East and the West: the Helmstedt border was known as Alpha; the Dreilinden border between East Germany and West Berlin was Bravo; and the crossing point between West Berlin and East Berlin was known as Charlie (hence "Checkpoint Charlie"). The portraits of American and Soviet soldiers by Franck Thiel evoke the tensions of the Cold War. There is also a replica of a guardroom here.
