The original church of St Martin dominating Chapaize is all that is left of a Romanesque priory founded by Benedictine monks from Chalon. The most distinctive feature of the church, built between the 11C and the 13C in a Romanesque style denoting a Lombard influence, is its bell tower, a fine 35m high campanile. Note, on the outside, the thick buttresses and the west front decorated with archaic sculptures. The interior consists of three naves; on entering, one is surprised by the huge pillars (4.80m in circumference) and their accentuated angle. The remarkable cupola surmounting the transept is well worth seeing.
