Occupying an extinct crater known simply as The Punchbowl, this is the final resting place for more than 40,000 US military men and others whom the government has honored. Many come to visit the graves of World War II correspondent Ernie Pyle and Hawaii astronaut Ellison Onizuka, who died in the Challenger space-shuttle disaster of 1986.
