This uninhabited island west of the Isle of Mull was made famous by Mendelssohn's overture Fingal's Cave, which he composed after a stay in Staffa in 1829. The island attracts many visitors for its peculiar shape sticking out from the sea and the striking curves of its dark basalt columns. According to fans of the "musical cave", it is best to visit in heavy weather, when the sea seems to sing in the cavity. The island is home to many birds and you might be lucky enough to see seals and whales.
