In 1888, Archduke Rudolf was 30 years old. His support for the Hungarian parliamentary opposition and his liberal ideas frightened the aristocracy. His relationship with Maria Vetsera caused a scandal. After a stormy meeting with Emperor Franz Joseph, he commited suicide along with his loved one. The hunting lodge where they died was turned into a Carmelite Convent, and the bedchamber into a commemorative chapel, next to which a few rooms have been given over to furniture and documents relating to this tragic event.
