Beneath the pavement of Pendleton lies a shadow city, an underground network used from the 1880s to 1950s. Back then, the town was a rambunctious place with as many as 32 saloons and 18 brothels. Although law enforcement was often lax, there were times when clients of those establishments needed to make a fast exit. On such occasions they could dive through hidden doorways into a warren of basements and passageways. During prohibition, entire saloons and gambling parlors went underground. These spaces also provided living quarters and some freedom of movement for Chinese laborers before the turn of the century, when racist curfews forbade them from being out after dark. No one knows how extensive the tunnels were, but one reportedly ran 5mi to the town of Rieth. The 90min guided tour leads through subterranean saloons, gambling parlors, living quarters, a jail, and an aboveground brothel. Most of the spaces are set up to look as they might have when in use.
