This 4 400ha reserve is on the eastern end of the uninhabited island. The only European nature reserve in the Netherlands, it is a veritable paradise for nature lovers. The dunes and estuary areas attract many birds, which come to nest. The vegetation is remarkable, boasting a wealth of original orchid species and halophyte plants. During the birds' nesting period, a large part of the reserve is closed off to the public.
