The central focus of the historic cemetery is the burial place of the princely family, built in 1825-27 by C.W. Coudray. It is the resting place of Goethe, Schiller and Duke Karl Augustus. Behind this monument stands the Russian Orthodox Church, built between 1859 and 1862 for the Grand Duchess Maria Pavlova, daughter-in-law of Karl Augustus.
