The fan-shaped façade of the Neue Burg flanks the Heldenplatz, the perspective of which is completed to the northwest by the spire of the new city hall. The square is embellished with the equestrian statues of Prince Eugene of Savoy, who defeated the Turks in the 17C, and Archiduke Karl, who defeated Napoleon at Aspern-Essling in 1809. Both are the work of the sculptor Anton Dominik Fernkorn. To the southwest, the monumental outer gate (Äußeres Burgtor) was built in 1824 and opens on to the city's Ring.
